Comprehensive Weight Loss Center 4500

A Different Approach

There are so many options in the world of weight loss today. In the past, people used to think that it was all about diet and exercise. But at the WESTMED Comprehensive Weight Loss Center, we know there’s much more to it. That’s why we take a completely different approach.

We don’t look at weight management simply as a behavioral issue. We look at it from a scientific standpoint, since we know that weight regulation involves a complex interaction between the hormones in our body. Our cutting-edge approach is rooted in biology. This technique gives us insight into your weight loss issue.

At the WESTMED Comprehensive Weight Loss Center, we don’t judge you. We know that weight loss issues are not your fault. In fact, we now know that biology, not willpower controls body weight in the long term.

There are a number of factors that can lead to weight gain, such as dietary composition, sleep deprivation, stress, medications and hormones. We will carefully review this with you and prescribe a tailored approach to help you lose weight. Understanding the science behind weight gain helps us give you an effective weight loss plan for long term success.

Here at WESTMED, you will have a comprehensive team working together to help you manage your weight — specializing in obesity medicine, nutrition, bariatric surgery, sleep medicine, gynecology, behavioral health, physical therapy and weight management.

At WESTMED, we never give up. We always find an option that will work for you.

Let’s face it ladies, we like to eat. And although we can blame it on our birth control pill, our last pregnancy or the rocky ride of menopause, the reality is that excess weight has negative effects on our health just the same.

We face multiple hormonal hurdles that affect our eating habits throughout our lifespan. Those extra pounds can contribute to infertility, increase the risks of pregnancy and delivery, as well as affect the health of our baby. As the excess pounds add up after each pregnancy, and the stress of working and raising a family contribute to excess pounds, our future risk of heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease increases, as well as certain cancers particularly postmenopausal breast cancer.

We understand the unique issues women have in losing and achieving a healthy weight. Dr. Julianne Dunne, board certified in both obesity medicine and obstetrics and gynecology, will help guide you to make the dietary and lifestyle changes that will help balance your hormones. In addition to losing weight, you will feel better, sleep better and have more energy.

At our first meeting, we will

  • Review your medical and nutritional history
  • Obtain baseline measurements and blood work
  • Review nutrition basics
  • Review lifestyle improvements
  • Discuss a structured eating plan
  • Consider high protein meal replacements to jump start your program
  • Consider prescription weight loss medications, if appropriate

Compliance and accountability are crucial to weight loss and maintenance. We offer:

Weekly weigh-ins (or call in your stats if you cannot come in)
HealthTrac App to monitor your daily progress
Wellness Portal to receive daily emails for your eating plan and exercise regimen

Our program is designed to empower people who are overweight to take greater control of their health. We know that it’s much easier to stick with a program if you enjoy it. So we work closely with each individual patient to customize a program by taking into account your personal needs, general health, likes and dislikes, as well as your physical capabilities. When performed correctly, this program leads to loss of weight, an improvement in energy levels, a decrease in the aches and pains associated with being overweight, and an improvement in function and overall quality of life.

Westmed’s licensed Doctors of Physical Therapy are available to work with you to achieve your fitness and weight loss goals. Our physical therapists will begin by performing a comprehensive fitness evaluation. A thorough fitness evaluation can often uncover underlying musculoskeletal issues that may be affecting your health and fitness. Based on these results, we will design an individually tailored exercise program for you. These exercises will be performed and progressed in our clinic under medical supervision. You will also be provided with a series of home exercises to supplement and reinforce your clinical program.

Losing weight and getting fit are usually about making the right choices and acting on them. We believe that fitness should be fun. Having a positive attitude and working together toward a goal with our patients helps them achieve their objectives much faster and much easier.

We believe that the best outcomes come from a multidisciplinary approach to your healthcare. We work closely with your physician and the entire weight management team to monitor your progress and provide support.

Upon discharge from our program, you will have achieved a greater level of physical fitness. In addition, you will have been trained in proper exercise form, gained a greater appreciation of the importance of stretching and body alignment and be able to safely progress your exercise program independently. Applying what you've learned will reduce the chance of injury. Our physical therapists will also discuss the next steps in your fitness routine such as exercising at a local gym or in the comfort of your home to help you maintain a healthier lifestyle.
WESTMED Behavioral Health provides fully-integrated care as part of your overall weight management program. We can provide bariatric surgery evaluations and psychiatric evaluations for any associated mental illness including eating disorders. In conjunction with your physician, we can provide psychiatric medications and individual psychotherapy to help you lose weight.

We offer an eight-week psychotherapy group for people suffering from emotional eating, depression and weight management issues. This group utilizes a cognitive behavioral approach (CBT) and participants will learn alternative approaches, such as mindfulness exercises and practical tips to attain a healthy balanced lifestyle. It will also help people with diabetes and heart disease who need to lose weight for optimal health.

What We Do

Our bariatric surgeons have extensive experience in weight-loss surgery, and are innovators in minimally invasive bariatric and laparoscopic surgery. Bariatric surgery can be a highly effective treatment for reducing excess weight and improving or resolving comorbidities in obese patients.

Conditions We Treat

Surgeons treat patients using a variety of surgical procedures, depending on individual needs. Bariatric surgery helps facilitate weight loss through multiple means, including malabsorption, restriction, altered hormone levels and changes in brain receptors.

Modes of Treatment

Specialists have extensive experience with all the minimally invasive weight loss procedures and do these procedures laparoscopically. Their areas of expertise include:

  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
  • Adjustable gastric banding (lap band)
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch
  • Intragastric balloons

Why We Are Different

Our board-certified bariatric surgeons have over 50 years of combined experience and have performed more than 5,000 bariatric surgeries. They perform surgeries in a Level 1 ACS bariatric center (the highest level of accreditation), and manage some of the most challenging and complex patients. Our surgeons have received Health Grades’ Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award for six consecutive years, and are ranked among the best in the U.S. for bariatric surgery. Physicians on the bariatric surgery team have performed live surgeries by teleconference at many society meetings, and continue to present their research internationally. Surgeons are highly experienced in laparoscopic techniques, and carefully match patients with the appropriate surgical procedure, working closely with other healthcare teams at WESTMED.

Our highly trained dietitians have extensive experience in helping patients achieve both safe and sustainable weight loss.

The nutrition program includes:

  • A structured, “jump start” meal plan designed to give patients a quick weight loss early on, which has been shown to increase motivation and improve health outcomes
  • Once initial weight loss is achieved, sessions will be focused on transition to a conventional, low-glycemic food plan (if meal replacements are utilized)
  • Creating goals and meal plans that fit each individual’s lifestyle
  • Educating patients with information about macronutrients and their role in metabolism and fat storage
  • Regularly scheduled visits with the dietitian, which will involve reviewing the diet plan, assessing weight loss progress, addressing hunger/cravings and troubleshooting any areas of difficulty (i.e. social events, traveling, stress, dining, grocery shopping, preparing quick, healthy meals, etc.)
  • Identification of internal and external factors along with current behaviors that are sabotaging weight loss efforts
  • Providing nutritional support for the bariatric program both preoperatively and postoperatively
  • Diet recommendations based on the most up-to-date scientific research

Patients enrolled in this program will safely lose weight while experiencing decreased hunger and cravings along with an increase in energy levels and an overall sense of wellbeing.

BMI is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI is moderately correlated with more direct measures of body fat obtained from skinfold thickness measurements and other measurements. A high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness. BMI can be used as a screening tool but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual, according to the CDC.

To determine if a high BMI is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments. These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings, according to the CDC.

This BMI calculator is for adults, 20 years old and older. For children and teens, 2 through 19 years old, use the BMI Calculator for Children and Teens.
