Ebola Update from WESTMED Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Arthur Forni
‘’There is much discussion about the current situation worldwide regarding the Ebola virus. The CDC and other health organizations are taking the spread of the Ebola virus very seriously. Even though it is extremely unlikely for a case to appear in our community, the chance of an international traveler bringing Ebola to our region is not zero, and our healthcare personnel will be vigilant in watching for this so that early isolation and treatment can occur.
The virus is not easily transmissible if basic hand hygiene and contact precautions are taken. It is NOT transmitted by an airborne route, but only through active bodily secretions from a sick patient (blood, urine, feces, vomit, sweat, etc.) which need to be transmitted through a mucosal surface (mouth, nose, eyes, genital region) or through breaks in the skin. Appropriate caution is always reasonable, but panic is unwarranted."
