WESTMED Medical Group is announcing the rollout of the WESTMED Spine Center, featuring a multi-specialty team approach to spine care, with specialists who collaborate to provide a prompt assessment and treatment plan for patients with back or neck pain. Dr. Stephen Andrus, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, and Dr. Alok Sharan, orthopedic spine surgeon, are co-directors of the Center.
“We understand that treating patients with neck and back disorders can be challenging,” said Dr. Andrus. “Often patients have extreme pain and have difficulty finding a fast track to the right provider in order to receive the care they need. This program aims to schedule patients with a spine specialist quickly and to treat them in a seamless, integrated, coordinated process, using conservative measures first.”
The medical team at WESTMED’s Spine Center includes specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, orthopedic spine surgery, neurology, behavioral health, pain management, chiropractic care and alternative medicine. The team works together to develop a treatment plan best suited to each patient’s unique condition. Additionally, treatment plans are reviewed, and results are tracked in regularly scheduled conferences, where specialists exchange ideas and strategies in order to achieve the best outcomes.
Dr. Sharan explains, “If surgery is found to be the best treatment for a patient, we treat with the latest minimally invasive techniques of spine surgery, which allows for less post-operative pain, smaller incisions and faster recovery time.”
“This is another excellent addition to our integrated care process for patients with conditions that require multi-disciplinary collaborative care across specialties,” Dr. Steven Meixler, WESTMED co-medical director and vice president, said.
The specialists treat numerous conditions that affect the spine, including herniated disks, sciatica, pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, fractures, spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, radiculopathy, scoliosis, kyphosis (unnatural curvature of the spine), spinal deformities, degenerative disk disease, arthritis and tumors.
Dr. Meixler said, “Our goal at the WESTMED Spine Center is to ensure that our patients are seen by the right provider in the shortest period of time and receive the right care to achieve an optimal result.”
