The American Red Cross has a blood shortage in the region, since severe January weather caused the cancellation of more than 340 blood drives in 20 states. Each year there is a blood shortage in the region in the wintertime, and hospitals need blood throughout the cold winter months to respond to patients’ emergencies for transfusions and cancer treatments.
To donate blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds, have no history of exposure to hepatitis or HIV/AIDS and your last blood donation has to be at least 56 days prior.
To make an appointment to donate blood or platelets, download the Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
